USB software is often referred to as “portable software”. What is a portable program ? It’s a piece of software that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any other computer, because portable applications require no installation whatsoever. It can be your email program, your browser, system recovery tools or even an operating system. All the user-specific data are stored on the USB device (a stick, a portable harddisk), which means universal data access even without any internet connection. These days, one could literally run a full server setup from a USB stick and plug it in at the next internet cafe.
Portable applications
There is a wide range of portable apps available. There’s mail, office and of course gaming software, and the best part is, that many of these programs come for free. Some of the most popular USB software application are ports of popular open source clients like Thunderbird or Firefox. The apps are tweaked in such a way that no installation is necessary.
We point out all the USB app goodies
Watch out – soon our new section “portable app goodies” will open. We plan to review various link collections containing information about portable applications, as we noticed that there is huge quality difference. Next year we will launch our very own portable software feature pack – partner inquiries are of course highly welcome.
